In order to secure the contaminated site, formerly used as a production site for the chemical industry, it was surrounded with a sealing wall. Water contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons (HCH, chlorinated benzene and phenols) is pumped out of this sealing wall pot and fed to a treatment plant together with groundwater from the outflow plume. In addition to the pollutants, the water contains dissolved iron and manganese. The de-iced water is fed to an activated carbon filtration system by means of aeration and precipitation/flocculation treatment and after oxygen saturation, is discharged directly into the receiving water.
In addition to water treatment, the exhaust air is cleaned and the iron hydroxide sludge produced is dewatered at the point of origin using decanters.
The entire system technology had to be modernized and expanded after more than 20 years of use. This happened during ongoing operation.
The modernized system runs 24/7 with a throughput of up to 38 m³/h. A remote access and dedicated fault reporting system, as well as process data storage and visualization are installed.
